Movie Review: The Proposal

Photobucket

I was really looking forward to this movie ever since I saw the previews for it back in January. All I wanted to do was go to the midnight showing of it, but none of my friends would go with me so I saw it opening day at a matinee. I would like to thank my friends for not going so I didn't waste too much money on this. I felt really let down after I finally saw it, probably because I was expecting it to be so much better. This movie isn't terrible, it just wasn't as great as I expected. The humor isn't that funny or original and most of the jokes are actually just stupid except one that I don't think even was intended to be funny just a rude remmark to back Sandra Bullock's mean spirited character. There's one part when Sandra Bullok does some Native Indian dance in the woods with Ryan Reynold's grandmother and she starts hip hop dancing and singing Lil Jon. That part honestly made me cringe and wish I was dead because it is so unbelievably stupid. The worst part was that scene somehow got the most laughs out of the entire movie. I could not believe people thought her dancing was so hilarious. If you have anything more than an average sense of humor and aren't a fan of romantic comedies you'll be bored out of your mind and shouldn't see this. I like romantic comedies though, so I could tolerate it. The story is alright, but again it's nothing special. It's incredibly predictable, there are no suprises in the plot but for some reason I was ok with that. The story isn't very believable either, there's no way a responsible adult with a great career would jeopardize their life by forcing their assistant to marry them so they won't be deported. There is other retarded shit that happens too, that would never happen in real life, like them getting married a few days after Ryan Reynolds tells his parents. Come on, that's just stupid and was only in the movie so Ryan Reynolds could be left at the alter so the movie could have a sad moment then turn itself around. Another portion of the movie I absolutly hated was an on going joke when this Mexican guy keeps showing up in every other scene and it's supposed to be funny every single time he's visible. Nothing he says or does is funny. The Proposal isn't charming or cute like romantic comedies should be but it does make you feel good and happy for the characters at the end. However, since you know how it ends, you just kind of start counting down the minutes until it finally concludes. This review might sound negative, but to be honest I didn't hate it as much I sound like I did. It's a bad movie, but in an alright and tolerable way...if that makes any sense.
